George Washington 1789

This is taken from Rush Limbaugh's website. I wish this is why we celebrate this day today but I am not so sure about that. We have lost our way as a nation since George Washington gave these words 217 years ago declaring this day as the day we give thanks to our Lord.

The George Washington 1789 Thanksgiving proclamation.  Here's what George Washington proclaimed in 1789:

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor -- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks -- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation -- for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility [sic], union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed -- for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted -- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions -- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually -- to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed -- to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn [sic] kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord -- To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease [sic] of science among them and us -- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York
the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

What the Election Tells Us

I was completely wrong this time. I underestimated the sentiment of voters who were angry with Republicans after the big win of 2004. After a couple of days to reflect, gather my thoughts, and read some analysis of the disastrous day, here is what I have come up with.

  • Weak Republicans lose.
If you haven't read Hugh Hewitt's Townhall article, check it out. He convincingly lays out the argument that John McCain is largely responsible for the defeat in the last election. To a large degree I agree with him. Hewitt points out three key events led by McCain that helped the Democrats win a huge victory.

The Republicans were riding high after the crushing victory in 2004 and had huge momentum. The biggest issue on the plate was the issue of appointing Judges and crushing the Democrats ability to filibuster. The "nuclear option" was on the table and we were heading towards implementing it, putting an end to the unconstitutional use of filibusters on judicial nominees. Right when the Senate Republicans were about to use this option, McCain pulled the rug out from underneath them and, along with the "Gang of 14", made a compromise with the obstructionist Democrats keeping the filibuster option on the table. Yes, we did get two fine Supreme Court Judges but the filibuster is still there for another day. That day has come and it cannot prevented. Thanks John.

Time after time, Republicans in the Senate acted like they were in the minority and compromised with the Democrats. They did not stand with the President and did not pursue promises made to the voters. The voters gave them a victory on promises of strong conservatism but instead, they were weak and cowered to the Democrats on almost every issue.
The House fared little better. They had opportunities to go on the offensive against corruption but chose not to. When a Democrat was found with money in his freezer from illegal payments, Dennis Hastert chose to defend one of his fellow Congressmen rather than demand resignation. The Democrats would not have been so kind. As they have shown over and over again, at the first sign of scandal they demand that everyone with an (R) next to their name resign.

The people grew tired of Republicans who campaigned on conservative principals but did not back it up with action. Bush is guilty of this as well. He had many opportunities to go right to the American people and define issues like the economy (which is great), the war (which is not going perfectly but huge progress is being made), tax cuts (which are working) and so on. Instead, he let the media and the Democrats define these issues.
  • Conservatism wins elections.
The past three elections proved this. Republicans won seats in an historic midterm election in 2002. The war was part of this but they ran as conservatives on the heels of tax cuts, defense, originalism of judges, and so on. They won big in 2004 then stopped being conservative.

Clinton may have won two Presidential election in the 90's but the House and the Senate both became Republican because of such things as the Contract with America. Americans like conservative ideas and principles. When those ideas and principles are clearly presented to them, Republicans win big. For the past two years the Republicans acted like liberals and paid for it. They got lazy. They got complacent with our money and spent it like crazy. This most recent election was not a referendum for liberal politics but conservative politics. People rejected the Republicans because they stopped being conservative, not because they wanted liberalism.
  • Democrats are the party of whiners and cheaters.
It is amazing how there were no accusations of cheating involved. When Republicans lose, they concede and move on. When Democrats lose, they whine and sue anyone and everyone. I guarantee that there would have been countless claims of cheating and lawsuits if the Republicans would have won enough close races to keep control of the House and/or Senate. Democrats believe in their fantasy world that they deserve to win every election and if they don't, there must have been cheating involved. Surely the people wouldn't be so stupid to reject their vision for America. Would they? We all know that stupid people join the military, don't we? Or do they go to church? Or live in the South? I can't remember. Maybe there are just tons of stupid people that vote Republican. With the Democrats constant focus on cheating, I am beginning to wonder if maybe...no, they wouldn't cheat.
  • The next two years are crucial.
The Democrats now have the power in Congress. They have to lead rather than namecall. Republicans need to regather, refocus, and recover the House and Senate while holding on to the White House. The best weapon for the Republicans is the Democrats. When they talk, people get fired up and vote. The Republicans must return to Conservatism however because if they do not regain both the House and the Senate in 08, we are in trouble. If they lose the White House, that means Hillary, and that is not allowable. That woman can not be allowed anywhere near the White House again. Losing the House and the Senate for a couple of years is unfortunate, losing it beyond that along with the White House would be disastrous.

Election Day Optimism!

I think tomorrow is going to be a great day for Republicans. I don't buy into any of the polls or the MSM's optimism about Democratic takeover of both the House and the Senate. I think the Senate is going to stay about the same. Who knows, maybe the Republicans can gain a seat or two as well. I think Santorum is going to get re-elected. I think the House is going to stay about the same. The Democrats may take 1 or 2 seats but overall, the day is going to be another crushing defeat filled with moral victories and claims of voter fraud and disenfranchisement. I am saying it today so I can give a big "I told you so!" just like I gave in November 2004 when the Left was predicting another huge victory on election day.

If it turns out that I am wrong, I will admit it and pray for the safety of this country. I hope that it does not turn out that way because the stakes are too high.

Jessica Coleman on Oprah

My wife told me about the Oprah show today regarding a woman who is now serving jail time for the murder of her baby when she was 15. In short, her story goes as follows. When Jessica was 15, she became pregnant but hid the pregnancy. After giving birth to the baby in the upstairs bathroom of her house she put the baby in the closet. After eating dinner she went back upstairs and stabbed the baby because she thought he might be in pain and wanted to put an end to that pain. Her boyfriend and she decided to put the baby in a bag and throw him in a quarry. The baby was found six months later but they didn't know she did it. After a while evidence came out that led to her arrest and conviction. She is now serving a six year sentence for the murder of her baby. People who watched Oprah are outraged by the leniency of this sentence but I take a different look at it.

We live in a society that, for the past 30 years or so, does not care about unborn life. We teach our kids that they should do whatever feels good. Sex is something they are going to have so be safe. There is no such thing as absolute right or wrong. Life does not begin at conception but when the mother decides she wants that blob of tissue thus turning from a lifeless mass to a precious baby.

The family has no value anymore because we have destroyed the sanctity of marriage. These kids are being raised with no values and no structure. I do not know about the specifics of Jessica Coleman but she has grown up in this society. While I personally believe that what she did is heinous and mind blowing, I look at it from the lens of the Bible where life is sacred. Our society does not value life and has made abortion legal up to almost any point before birth if the mother's health, including mental and emotional health, is "in danger". There are many people in this country who see no problem with delivering a "fetus" feet first to the neck, shoving a scissors into the base of "its" skull, and sucking out "its" brain before pulling "it" all the way out. This is not murder because a doctor at an abortion clinic did the "procedure".

Why is what Jessica did any worse? I don't really see the difference. She didn't want this baby. He would have been a burden on her. This was a time in her life when raising a child would have been hard and maybe even an embarrassment. She was the mother and it was her body so she had the right to do with her body as she pleased. Sure she could have had an abortion but maybe she was scared. She could have done many things but she made a choice, and I thought being "pro-choice" was what we were teaching our kids. Fifteen year olds do not have a propensity for making wise choices but she made a choice nonetheless. Instead of having an abortion doctor suck out her baby for her, she delivered her baby, shoved him into a duffel bag and tossed him into a quarry.

According to the intent of our law, why should she be judged for murdering a part of her own body, a lifeless and unwanted fetus? Aren't young girls told that life begins when the mother decides? That there isn't such thing as right or wrong, only what you determine is right or wrong for yourself?

Just to reiterate, what Jessica did was terrible and was murder but that is looking at it from a Biblical perspective. What matters here is American law because once again, I see incredible inconsistencies and hypocrisies. A fetus is a baby if a mother gets shot while pregnant but not if she willingly sucks it out in a clinic. A fetus is a baby when a woman wants him/her and a doctor must remove him/her via c-section but not if she secretly delivers in a bathroom and throw him/her into a quarry. Our society is so screwed up and I have tremendous sympathy for this woman.

I read the message board on oprah.com and so many people expressed outrage towards Jessica and claimed that they have no sympathy for her. I would love to hear their position on abortion. It wouldn't shock me if they were "pro-choice". The difference here is that the baby was put into a duffel bag and thrown into a quarry rather than tossed into a red biohazzard bag like the aborted babies.

What is the right thing to do to Jessica? Should she have received a stiffer penalty? I really don't know. You would have a hard time convincing me that what she did was any worse than what happens on a daily basis in this country. I honestly cannot say what the appropriate punishment for Jessica is. Our country is so messed up on this issue that nothing makes sense anymore.

I teach fifteen year olds and they make stupid decision all the time when left to themselves. The fact that they are lied to every day of their lives by television, movies, music, teachers, parents, and politicians does not help their already poor decision making. Where is Oprah's outrage with the liberal politicians and judges who have made abortion legal? Where is Oprah's outrage with actors and actresses who promote sex and abortion on screen? Where is Oprah's outrage with musicians who glorify promiscuity through their music.

I believe in personal responsibility as strongly as anyone, but I have to have sympathy and compassion for anyone in Jessica's situation because of the mess our country is in and the lies they hear. If a fetus is granted the choice of life, I pray that they meet our Loving Lord and Savior as early as possible, otherwise there will be many more stories like Jessica's appearing on the Oprah show.

Proverbs 7:24

"Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, And pay attention to the words of my mouth."

I wish we could bring the Bible back into our public education system. Our students need to hear words like these. I go insane everyday trying to give instructions to my students because they do not listen to a word I say. They have such a lack of respect for their teachers that they carry on conversations whenever they feel like it while I am explaining to them how to do the material that will be on the next test.

In class today, a girl that complains all the time that "I don't explain anything" had her headphones on and was listening to music loudly while I was giving notes. This is not uncommon either. This year has been better than most but students will put their headphones on while I am looking away thinking it is an OK thing to do and that I will not notice the wires coming out of their ears. Following a failed test, students all the time will exclaim "You are a crappy teacher! You didn't explain anything!" What were these students doing while I was explaining everything? They were talking to their friends, listening to music, reading a book. I will stop right in the middle of giving notes when they start carrying on these side conversations and lecture them on respect, responsibility, and personal accountability and as soon as I finish they carry on as though I hadn't said a word.

They don't care. They have no respect and have grown up in an educational environment that tells them learning cannot take place unless they are having fun. Since I do not entertain my students on a daily basis they have decided that it is OK to disengage from the learning process and do whatever they want to do. They have learned that it is OK to do this because their parents enable them by complaining about the teacher. At conferences the other day a parent told me that she has a huge problem with our math department because we base most of our grades on test scores. Her child has an F because he does 60% of his homework and averages a 35%. During class he does not take notes, does not listen to my instruction, does not participate in classroom exercises, does not do homework, and does not study for tests. He then goes home and tells his mom that I do not explain anything (not true), do not give chapter reviews (also not true), do not go over homework problems (again, not true), and do not give them time to work on assignments during class (for the fourth time, not true). He lies to his mom but what does she do? She blames the math department because her son would never lie and our grading policy is completely unfair.

I have had to deal with so many parents like this. Instead of placing the responsibility where it belongs, on their child, they blame the easy target. It is the teacher's fault. I created a website where I post comments, homework assignments, and grades this year and actually had many parents hold their kids accountable because they saw the failing grades early on. While this did make a difference for some of them I still have my fair share of parents who blame me rather than the child.

Our society has become so technologically advanced that it is hard to find quietness anymore. Between radio, television, video games, mp3 players and so on, there is noise 24/7. Kids think that noise must be present and when it is not, they get very nervous. If I ask a question and tell them to think about it without responding, at least six kids will shout out the first thought that comes to their mind. Silence frightens them.

So many of my students who fail math would pass if they would just shut their mouths and listen to what I say. I tell them how to do everything they need to do well on the test, they just don't hear it because they are talking. When I occasionally get them to listen quietly I inevitably hear, "That's it, that is easy! Why didn't you tell us that the first time?"

I did. And the second, and the third...
